WONDERING HOW YOU CAN GET A TOW TRUCK

You may have seen a tow truck in traffic and thought you might want to try driving one. However, most drivers don’t even know where or how to get a tow truck in the first place.
Purchasing a towing vehicle is not as simple as going to a standard car lot. Even if you do locate a tow truck you can afford to buy, you still need the proper training and certification to operate it.
As is the case in operating a big rig or logistics truck, a towing driver must have a CDL, or Commercial Driver License. These differ from standard licenses in that they require specialized schooling.
Once earned, you’ll need to visit a commercial car dealership or a utility vehicle retailer. While you can find used towing vehicles more easily, it’s the same as purchasing an older, used car; there’s going to be a significant amount of maintenance involved, and you might have to restore it before use.

CDL Training
Although CDLs are the result of federal policies, each state has different training requirements. And although there are different levels of CDLs, A, B, and C, you likely will require a B license as it allows for heavier towing loads.
Your training incorporates both a written test and a physical driving exam. Even if you’ve driven a passenger car for years, operating a commercial vehicle is another animal entirely.

Purchasing a Truck

Even if you have a commercial dealership in your area, you may still struggle with making a purchase. You might have to go through an equipment dealer or locate a distributor from the manufacturer’s website.
However, finding a truck isn’t done until you know what add-ons or style you’ll need for your new towing business. Will you offer motorcycle towing with a specialized lift, or will you only provide service to passenger vehicles?
Choose carefully and good luck with your new towing service company.
